A Day in the Life of a Pit BullĀ

The Heartbreak of Rescue

by Pit Sisters on 09/07/12

As much as we want to save them all, there are times that we also have to the unselfish thing and let them go, and that is what we were faced with today.

We learned that one of our rescue dogs, Hawkeye had gotten very sick.  Blood work and urinalysis was run, and it was discovered that he had end stage kidney failure.  After speaking with two of our veterinarians and seeing the physical shape Hawkeye was in, we decided it was time for us to end his suffering and take him over the rainbow bridge.

We were with him in his final moments, stroking his head and giving him lots of hugs and kisses as tears streamed down our faces.  We told him that we loved him and that we told him we were so sorry that we could not save him.

We will always remember Hawkeye's smile.  Hawkeye- we hope you are running free and that your pain is gone and the smile is back on your face.

We love you and we will never forget you.  We are heartbroken.

Thanks for being there for him, and showing him what it is like to be loved like the precious angel that he is. What a gift to him, all of you, and all of us. So happy he left this world surrounded by LIGHT.

From the moment I saw Hawkeye's picture, I wanted him. No logic, because I can't currently have another dog, but I wanted him anyway, and dreamed of that happy smile being there for me at the end of the day. I commend you ladies daily, to anyone who will listen, but on this, more personally... It's our hardest job as pet parents or guardians to do the right thing for our baby with whom we would selfishly prefer to spend more time. I often say it's the price we pay for unconditional love. It's so worth it, as many difficult things are. I am so glad the dog I adopted in my heart had y'all in his life, and there when he needed you to let him go.

I am so sorry for the loss of Hawkeye. We recently had to put down one of our dogs because he had gotten to the point where he could barely walk or eat but we knew he lived a great 17 years and it'd be selfish to let him be in pain any longer. It is such a sad time when a dogs life comes to that point and you have to make the decision for which they will no longer suffer. Again, I am so sorry and my thoughts are with you all. <3
